The 15th Annual Burkenroad Symposium

The A. B. Freeman School of Business is pleased to announce the return of the Burkenroad Institute’s Symposium. The 15th Annual Symposium on Business and Society will address “Critical Moments in Leadership: Changing the Rules of the Game.” After Katrina canceled the 14th Annual Symposium, the symposium has moved to spring.

Through the Annual Symposium on Business and Society, the Institute's objective is to focus attention on the corporate social responsibilities of business leaders as well as to stimulate thought and discussion among students, faculty, executives, and community leaders about some of the difficult issues that face today's leaders and managers. National experts in business, education, journalism, and policy-making participate in this annual conference.

This year’s distinguished panelists are as follows:
Holly J. Gregory is a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges. She counsels corporate directors, executives, and investors on the full range of governance issues. Ms. Gregory has helped organize governance-related programs for the SEC, OECD, World Bank, Yale’s Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance, Transparency International, and Columbia University School of Law’s Institutional Investor Project. She has written extensively on governance - related topics including for a short time as a featured columnist in Dow Jones’ Corporate Governance publication. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Senior Lawyers’ Project and serves as pro bono counsel to the Brooklyn Public Library and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Ms. Gregory is a summa cum laude graduate and former executive editor of the Law Review at New York Law School.

Bill Carey is the author of Leave No One Behind: Hurricane Katrina and the Rescue of Tulane Hospital. This story is about the largest corporate funded rescue in American history and is the exemplar among rescue operations in New Orleans. He interviewed about 100 people as part of his research concerning the evacuation of Tulane Hospital. Mr. Carey has written five books, mostly about Nashville history, the best known of which is Fortunes, Fiddles, and Fried Chicken: A Nashville Business History. He is a Vanderbilt alum and former naval flight officer who moved to Nashville in 1992. Mr. Carey worked as a journalist for several years with organizations such as the Nashville Tennessean, Nashville Scene, WPLN public radio, and the Internet newspaper NashvillePost.com, which he co-founded.

Frank B. Stewart, Jr. is Chairman Emeritus of the Board, Stewart Enterprises, Inc. He became Chairman Emeritus in 2003 after serving as Chairman since 1984 and as Chief Executive Officer from 1966 to 1995. Mr. Stewart is a Tulane University and School of Business alum. He is an active member and past chair of the A. B. Freeman School Business Council. He presently serves on the Tulane University Board of Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, and he is an honorary member and served on the Board of Governors for the Tulane Medical Center. Mr. Stewart is a board or committee member for the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts of America, New Orleans Business Council, the National World War II Museum, and the World Trade Center.

Samuel Tinsing Mok is the Managing Member of Condor International Advisors, LLC, a Washington DC based management consulting firm. Mr. Mok served as the Chief Financial Officer of the U.S. Department of Labor from January 2001 to May 2007. He previously served as Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, appointed by former Treasury Secretary James Baker. Mr. Mok was one of the highest-ranking Asian Americans in George W. Bush’s Administration and is regarded as a leader of the Chinese-American community. In 2006, Mr. Mok received the prestigious Donald L. Scantlebury Memorial Award for Distinguished Leadership in Financial Management Improvement.

This year’s moderator is:
Laura B. Cardinal is the Director of the William B. and Evelyn Burkenroad Institute and Associate and Exxon Professor of Strategy at the A. B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Her areas of expertise include managing innovation and R&D capabilities and understanding the evolution and adaptation of control systems. Laura is a National Science Foundation grant recipient and has published in Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Academy of Management Journal, and Journal of Accounting and Economics. She serves on the editorial boards of the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science.

The Symposium will be held on Friday, March 7, 2008, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Tulane’s uptown campus in the Lavin-Bernick Center, 213 Kendall Cram Lecture Hall. Free and open to the public.
